Youth & Young Adults On Mission Launched

The Diocesan Youth Commission is committed to working for the empowerment of youth for discipleship and service.  With support from the Pontifical Mission Societies, The Youth and Young Adults on Mission Programme  seeks to engage young people between the ages of 12 – 35 in local missionary activities.  The programme consists of 2 components:  Youth Led Mission Projects and a Peer Evangelization Team.

The Diocesan Youth Commission invites youth groups  across the Diocese to submit proposals for a unique mission project in their communities or the wider Diocese.  The projects chosen must address at least one of the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching:

  1. Dignity of the Human Person
  2. Call to Family, Community and Participation
  3. Rights and Responsibilities
  4. Preferential Option for and with People who are Poor
  5. Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
  6. Solidarity
  7. Care for God’s Creation

In preparation for the missionary activity Youth Groups are encouraged to use the See, Judge, Act, Review Method.

A project application forms (available from the Diocesan Youth Office) must be completed requiring a narrative outlining the project objectives, budget and expected outcome.  Based on the needs of the Project groups will be allocated a maximum of $500 to assist in realizing the missionary project.  Youth Groups will be required to submit a written and interactive electronic report on their project (PowerPoint, video, animation etc.).  Application of the See, Judge, Act, Review Method should be reflected in the presentation.

The young adult missionary, faced with challenges of our times, is guided by the Holy Spirit to witness with great courage and personal proclamation, the Good News of Christ.

The Diocesan Youth Commission invites young adults between the age 18-35 to be trained for outreach ministry to other youth throughout the Diocese and beyond.  The Peer Evangelization Team will conduct small group sessions, one day and weekend retreats for schools and youth groups.  The missionaries will work as a team and also individually in their parishes at certain times.  All training and preparation will be coordinated by the Diocesan Youth Office.  The first weekend residential training will be held from July 14-16, 2017.

Formation sessions will include: Missions of the  Church, Peer  Evangelization, Ministry to Youth, Leading and Facilitating Groups, Preparing a Witness Talk, Social Teachings of the church and much more!  Regular bi-monthly formation and support meetings will be held with the young adult team.

The Deadline for receipt of applications for both components is June 23, 2017.
